Ya know, people always think I say "Martha" when I say my name is "Melissa". Maybe I just talk really fast. Don't even get me started on my 11 letter, German last name - it only has two syllables, but people butcher it all the time. I usually correct the person politely. Any mispronunciation is a peeve of mine.

My son's name is Alec and everyone always calls him Alex - he HATES that. Ever since he could talk, and he started talking really early. he has been NOT so nice about the tone he uses to correct people. When he was four, a distant relative by marriage spent an entire afternoon calling him "Alex" with him correcting her each and every time. Really, like 25 times. He actually said to me "Mommy is that woman crazy? She keeps calling me Alex and I keep telling her my name is Alec - she must not be very smart. Sheesh." (BIG babyblue eyeroll added for emphasis).

I guess that's one way of handling it.

I guess there are worse things they could call you, but it would be nice if they would just listen. People really don't like to listen.

I get called 'Tim' a fair amount and I handle it like Hat Guy. Give them the information without calling attention to their error. It's easy enough to mishear something on a phone so no biggie.

By correcting them every single time. I get called Diane, I hate that. My life is about saying "Nuh! it's DIANANUH". They will learn but only if you correct them every single time.

I live in Durham, Krista. I think I got that Porter at Kroger, but I hear that Total Wines has a pretty good beer selection as well.

Give them a different name every time. It won't help but it should be good for a laugh.

Yeah, I talk on the phone all freaking day long, many times to people that won't speak to anyone else for fear that they will have to explain their "situations" more than once. Not to mention the fact that I'm from IL and talk mostly to customers in KY or AL and they have a hard time pronouncing, well, a lot. So, I'm JoAnne, JoEllen, Jonie, etc. I usually don't correct them, not because it's not important to me, but because I prefer to get them off the phone as soon as possible since I know I'm just going to hear from them the next day anyway. It amazes me the amount of public school personnel that don't check to see if the computer is even plugged in before calling support...Grrrrr!!!!

My husband's name is three letters and people insist on adding an extra letter to the beginning. I've seen ten minute exchanges where people just cannot get his name!!

try having a name like India (yes, like India.arie).. only i am quite a bit older than her & mine is a family name, believe it or not. I work in a call center & I have started keeping a log of the weird names i get. i.e. indiana, sylvia, virginia (wtf?), linda, sandy, andy, cynthia, cindy... & the list goes on...

Just suppose that somebody needed to send you $25 dollars or so and tried to PayPal it but then found out the email addy he had was wrong...what email address should he be sending that to?

People always get my name wrong over the phone. I say Erin, they hear Ann. How I respond depends on my mood. If I'm in a really bad mood it's "How's it going today Ann?" "Actually my name is E-RIN, and I'm fine how are you" If Im in a good mood I just don't bother correcting them.

People on the phone think my name is Donna. I do fear though that what I think sounds like "Hi, Thank you for calling, this is Diana how may I help you" really sounds like "Hidy! This is Donna how can I hep yew?".
