Respect my authory-tie!

People annoy me. Really, they do. That's why I'm not in one of those jobs that requires me to do any more customer service than absolutely necessary. Regardless of all that tripe, I have two direct reports. Occasionally, I allow my peers to give them work assignments, although it is rare that they don't have something to do.

Well, some people have it in their heads that they can pass all their shitty data entry jobs on over to them and make them do it. Then they have the audacity to get indignant when I tell them NOT to do those jobs and to do whatever it is I tell them they should be doing.

I had to explain twice today that "That is not his job. That is your job."

That seems to piss people off. They just don't know how to manage their own time. One guy HAS a fucking assistant. That's why I get particuarly miffed when he tries to give my bitches kids work.

So...how should I deal with this? I don't want to have to call one of those dreaded meetings where I strip everyone's confidence so thin they don't come to work the next day.

I used to be like your kids--I knew I was low man on the pole, so I thought everyone was my boss. Fortunately, I had a great (real) boss, who took me aside and got me broken of that habit.

Explain to your kids they work for you and not those other guys. When doing that, let them know you'll back them up when they turn down a work request from someone else. Tell them that if someone asks them to do something they should reply along the lines of, "I've really got to get this done; perhaps you could talk to Tiffany about it." It can and should be done profesionally and courteously.

Of course, you have to be ready to back them up, and your boss has to be willing to back you up, as well. After awhile, everyone realized I wasn't going to do their work for them and stopped asking me to do their shit.
