For $1,000/mo. I can get a frickin' au pair!

Right now, meaning at this very moment, I'm researching daycare centers. I keep reading that it's "never too early to begin the search" and that the second trimester is the best time to get 'er done.

Okay, you remember that Little Rascals Day Care scandal? I hate to confess it in this light, but that's the town I'm from. I went to school with many of the children affected by it.

It sucks that in a county whose full population is no more than 15,000 that's what we're known for. Screw the Edenton Tea Party.

Needless to say, regardless of the case's outcome, that could turn a person off daycare. I, myself, never went to daycare. Either I was watched by a family member or I watched myself. No shit. I was six and in a Bronx, NY apartment by myself for hours at a time.

This process skeeves me out a little. Because we can neither afford the quality of daycare I'd like to have my child in or for me to stay home, we have to find some reasonable alternative. I can foresee that this whole situation is going to give me one long case of heartburn.

Any moms out there have any tips for how to go about this? Right now I'm looking at centers, and if nothing suitable is available in my work zip code, I'll consider church daycares. The home-based care thing is bottom of my list. Some of the names of these places have got to be indicators of a lack of quality...

You may think you're searching for the best daycare facility, but you're not. You're merely trying to screen for the most discreet abusers.

After we picked one, I soon came to realize that I didn't care what they did with our offspring as long has he had a fresh diaper and a snotless upper lip by the time we picked him up.

Remember: If they don't meet your standards, lower your standards.
