Thanks a Million

You know, I think some people are in the practice of intentionally making everyone else's day or life as riddled with inconvenience as possible. For example: those people who brake to a complete stop to turn right into a gas station or whathaveyou. There are no cars in the intersection and none trying to exit the gas station. They just turn reeeeeeeally slow, which makes you ride your brakes almost to a complete stop yourself.

Then there are those people who inconvenience you because they don't want to inconvenience themselves. Under normal circumstances you'd never know they were that sort of person, however something bizarre occurs and they're tested.

What I'm really griping about here is the fact that over the past two weeks, I've been kind enough to chauffer Oops! from her drop-off at my home to work, and then all the way back to her house after work. I can estimate with some accuracy that the trips caused me to use an entire tank of gas more than my normal commute would require.

While I know that since she hadn't gotten her license back yet there would have been no way for her to get into work without me, so I wasn't going to deny her a ride. I accepted a sum of $5 in gas money for the two weeks because, as my grandmother used to remark, that it doesn't seem right charging people to go where you're going anyway. If I were hard up, I'd expect someone to step up and help me out without assuming to be paid handsomely for it.

I don't mind helping someone out temporarily, what really bugs me is that no one else would step up to give me a break one afternoon. I had driven Oops! to work, and then at lunch driven her downtown to get an assessment. I dropped her off and returned to the office at lunch. I asked everyone available at the office to pick her up when she was done and they all complained of "Not knowing downtown." Fuck that. I got lost myself coming back and I LIVE in Durham. So, when I went to pick her up, I didn't come back to work. It would have been asinine. Contrary to what Bossman thought, it would not have been a good idea to leave her sitting there for an hour or so while I processed paperwork.

I understand not wanting to do something--that's fine. There are a lot of things I don't want to do, like walking other peoples' personal mail to the mailbox and affixing postage to it.

But it's just inconsiderate to not even try to help out people who are trying to help other people out.

Sounds like you work in a really great office filled with compassion and teamwork.

Damn, people suck!

Do what you can, when you can. The karma will be good for you going forward, bad for those in your way trying to stop the goodness. One bit of advice "Don't lend out your car", not matter what if you do this, it will not be returned as good as you lent it. I have never loaned out a car that returned with the line "HEY! I tuned it up and had the brakes relined".

I'd never loan out my car - that's another lesson my grandma taught me. That's why I drive stick-shift: because none of my friends can. ;)

For the record, I am the friend that returns a borrowed vehicle with a full tank of gas and I even pick up any trash that's accumulated.

But I drove waaaay too fast. Sorry.
